(Intro with soft piano music)
Hello and welcome to your Greek Word on A Sunday. A weekly , bite-size podcast for anyone curious on language, etymology and connections. I am your host Emmanuela Lia and wherever you are in the world if you want to entertain your brain for a few minutes, this is the podcast for you. Let's go!
I always thought that the English find this word difficult not because of its meaning but because the original spelling has been kept. And that, can be a tad confusing since it's a different alphabet. Ονομα (onoma) in Greek means 'name' , ποιώ (pio/poio) means 'I create' , ' I make'. Their combination makes a word that describes all words that sound similar to what they mean like 'gasp' or 'hiccup' or 'moo'. ONOMATOPOEIA
