Φίλος (filos) in both ancient and modern Greek means 'Friend' and αδελφός (adelfos) means 'Brother' . The combined name was given first as a nickname to Ατταλος the second (Attalus II) and then, William Penn gave it to the city he designed in 1681 in America  ' A greene Country Towne, which will never be burnt and always be wholesome' and hoped that would prosper peacefully alongside native inhabitants and where all religions would be accepted.
