The letter A pronounced >a< in Greek is also used as a privative prefix and the letter B is pronounced V. The word Βυσσος (Vyssos) or Βυθος (Vythos) means 'the bed, the ground the depth' of something. So, A and Vyssos makes Avyssos which means something with 'no ground, no ground, of unknown depth'  ABYSS
