Νάρκισσος (Narcissos) in Greek mythology was a very handsome young man. He kept admiring his reflection on the river ignoring the call of the Nymph Ηχω (Echo) who was in love with him. As a result the voice of Ηχω started fading leaving only the last syllables of her words to be heard. The Goddess Nemesis got angry and turned Ναρκισσος into a river flower. Since then, the admiration of one's own self is called NARCISSISM and the phenomenon of a voice fading in open spaces ECHO
