In this episode, I share my surprising discoveries about life in Wenzhou, China. Initially struck by the city's impressive infrastructure but eerily quiet public spaces, I learned from a local friend that this paradox reflects a different way of living. Wenzhou residents shop primarily online through platforms like Taobao rather than visiting physical malls, and they seek leisure in the surrounding mountains rather than city centers. Perhaps most surprisingly, despite their love for luxury brands, locals prefer purchasing them abroad rather than in local stores. This exploration reveals how the "hardware" of a city (its buildings and infrastructure) can be disconnected from its "software" (how people actually live), challenging our assumptions about urban vitality and showing that understanding a place requires going beyond first impressions to discover its hidden rhythms and values.
