What informs your writing? I work in project management, and we always talk about input, output, outcomes - we have to know what the input is (the current situation, the problem), so that we can work on that and create an output (data, information, a system etc), which leads to an outcome (improved position with the data, for example). And I find this a useful way to think of what informs our writing.

The one time in my life where I didn't write much was when I didn't read much. It was like my head was empty of inspiration. Then I got back to reading, and it led to me getting back to writing ... but I wouldn't read in the genre I was writing in because I didn't want to influence my writing. THAT was a big mistake - of course I needed to be influenced. And my writing only improved when I started to read a lot, including in my own genre.

In this episode I talk about what informs our writing, so that we can improve, and become stronger writers in our chosen genre. Go on, be honest with yourself, what informs your writing?
