About the Speaker:
Janet Schalk became a Christian as a Freshman in college at the age of 18 and has been a disciple for 39 years. She has been a part of the Youth & Family Ministry, Campus, Singles, Marrieds and now Empty Nester Ministry. She has been a Bible Talk leader most of those 30 years, and has a deep love and appreciation for God’s Word and His Kingdom. Janet has been married for 30 years and has two daughters, aged 22 and 25 years old. She has worked for the San Diego Church of Christ for twelve years doing accounting and human resources, and has also worked in Real Estate Lending and Accounting. Janet has a degree in Finance from San Diego State University.

What is a Quiet Time, Why is it Important? What makes up a “good” quiet time? How do we have one?
The WHY
WHAT makes our time with God special or meaningful?
1) Knowing it is a dynamic and ever-changing relationship - Full of variety
2) No place for self-condemnation or pride
3) Time of gratitude - A longing fulfilled
WHAT will a Quiet Time look like?
1) Bible and Prayer
2) Singing, Meditating and Listening!
3) Times of Lament
4) Writing of songs or psalms, poetry or proverbs
God WANTS to spend time with you! Matthew 1:23 Immanuel – God with us!
· John 14:15-21 He wants to make His home with us!
· Matthew 28:18-20 He promises to be with us to the end of the age!
Learn to APPLY the Bible through Inductive Bible Study which involves thought-provoking questions which consist of three components:
A Quiet Time is a time of “Renewing our Minds” so we can be transformed by the Spirit of God. Romans 12:2 And not by listening to just “the latest ideas” Acts 17:21
Who do we want to be shaped by? Knowing God versus knowing about God.
PRACTICALS
First, I recommend keeping a special notebook of what you are learning each day.
1) When you are reading a book or passage in the Bible, ask yourself OBSERVATION questions. Observation questions help us understand the content of a passage by asking about the facts: Who, what, when, where and how.
2) INTERPRETATION questions delve into the meaning of the passage. When we interpret, we seek to understand the facts discovered through observation.
