When people think about community service, Black history, and culture, J. Morris often comes to mind. Always musically inclined, his journey began before birth—prophesied at a local church that he would pursue a divine artistic calling. He started as a natural drummer, progressing from banging on pots and pans to playing horns in church.
J. Morris’s passion grew stronger in high school, where he co-founded the “Essential Sounds Band,” a Go-Go group that quickly earned local fame. Their sound resonated throughout Washington D.C. and Dale City, Virginia—two areas steeped in history and the richness of Black musical expression. Through his music and service, J. Morris continues to honor the legacy of Black culture while paving new paths for others to follow.
