The Roommate

After his last roommate flunked out, Jake was thrilled to get a new one. Julian was a dream come true: perfectly quiet, perfectly clean, perfectly polite. He was, in a word, perfect. Maybe a little too perfect.

Julian never seemed to eat or sleep. He had no friends, no social media, no digital footprint whatsoever. He was a complete blank slate. Then, Jake noticed something deeply unsettling. Julian had started copying him. It started with small gestures and phrases, but soon Julian was mirroring Jake's every mannerism, his every habit. He was a perfect imitation.

The true horror began when Jake noticed a new scar on Julian’s face—a scar that perfectly matched one of his own. But when he finally confronted the housing authority, he was told the chilling truth: he's been living in a single room all semester. He has no roommate. So who—or what—has been living with him? And why is the face in his own mirror starting to look less and less like his own?
