There is a saying…..There is white wine, red wine and then there is Pinot Noir.

When Cabs and even Zins can be a perfect gateway into wine, and understanding what you like, Pinot Noir is not normally one of the first varietals that brings you in. That being said, the deeper you dive in to what you like, into your own understanding of fruit, of soil, of earth, terroir, crossing paths with Pinot Noir is inevitable. Its acquired taste, brilliant window into a sense of place, and arduous requirements in both the vineyard, AND the cellar make Pinot’s intrigue and appreciation something to savor.

Truthfully, Paso is not the first, or sometimes the second, or third, or fourth growing region mentioned when you talk about Pinot Noir? Why?

Maybe because there are local regions that maybe are more typically cooler climates? Santa Maria Valley, Sta Rita Hills, Santa Lucia Highlands, Edna Valley, just rattling off a few regions known for their Pinot Noir, and also right here on the central coast. While it is true, Paso has been known for its ripeness, for its ability to make big and expressive wines, it’s also true that Paso has areas where soil, ocean influence, elevation, and climate can, and have for decades, been able grow some world class Pinot Noir.

We’ll get some of this history today with Adelaida winemaker, Jeremy Weintraub.

In addition to Jeremy, we will introduce you to Marc Goldberg of Windward Vineyard. Mark and his wife Maggie are Paso legends.

Original music, “Good Company”, performed by Moonshiner Collective.
