Today we talk about the “Consulting Winemaker”. Essentially, a hired gun, commissioned to make a wine for a person, or maybe a brand, that wants to achieve a certain standard.

Unlike areas like France or other parts of the Old World even, Winemakers in Paso, in California, are revered. Many are known by name, perhaps by style, and it’s not uncommon for these winemakers to make consulting a side hustle, even a living, making wines for others, in addition to their own brand.

Today on WWTY, we talk to two of the most respected of these winemakers.

Amy Butler, of Ranchero Cellars, has since scaled down much of her client list for reasons she shares with us, but her style and acumen is well respected in Paso and her brand Ranchero Cellars is a favorite for sure.

Along with Amy this episode we meet Anthony Yount, winemaker of the highly popular Denner Vineyards. Anthony also makes the wine for many other well respected brands like SixMileBridge among more, in addition to his and his wife’s own estate brand, ‘The Royal Nonesuch Farm’.

This aspect of the wine industry is pretty fascinating, and listening to the connection that Amy and Anthony have makes for great and candid conversation the goes in a lot of fun directions.

Original music, “Good Company”, performed by Moonshiner Collective.
