Electric Vehicles:

2023 Cadillac Lyriq announced.

Mercedes EQB is coming to the U.S., we have basically zero details.

Toyota "announces" a new EV that looks like a Rav4. We have zero details.

Honda announces plans to phase out gas vehicles by 2040.

  • They will offer a mix of battery-electric and fuel cell vehicles.
  • 40% of sales will be electric by 2030, 80% by 2035.
  • First of their new generation, all-electric vehicles they'll offer will come in the second half of the decade.
  • Next EV will be in 2024.
  • These will allegedly sport solid-state batteries.

 

Charging:

A charging station in Portland, Oregon will offer Megawatt charging (in the future).

  • Currently offers 150kW charging, can be upgraded to 5MW.
  • Zero vehicles can actually accept >1MW charging.
  • Developed in partnership with Portland General Electric and Daimler.

Good Energy and ZapMap in the UK will offer free charging during "flash" periods where renewables are essentially free on the grid.

 

Other Fuels:

Madison City, Wisconsin is going to convert 20 of its vehicles to 100% biodiesel through the help of the National Biodiesel Board.

Hartwell Renewables is building a facility to produce 80m gallons of biodiesel from tallow by 2023.

  • Collaboration between Love's and Cargill.
  • Will be built in Hastings, Nebraska.
  • Roughly 811,000 tons of GHG emissions offset as a result. (73% reduction compared to diesel.)

 

Energy:

BP is spending $1.3b to stop flaring natural gas in the Permian Basin. Also has target of reducing oil/gas sales by 40% by 2030 and reach net zero eventually.

Exxon wants to build a $100b carbon-capture project, if the federal government will pitch in.

  • Exxon is very much lagging behind other oil majors in terms of renewables development.
  • The carbon capture project would be *huge*, capturing 50m tons of CO2 per year by 2030.

 

Policy:

U.S. will pledge to meet International Maritime Organization's goal of net-zero emissions in shipping by 2050.

The United Mine Workers of America organization says it supports Biden's climate goals, but that they need training offered to relocate workers.
