Some Definitions:

A Heat - A batch of liquid iron or steel produced from a blast furnace, basic oxygen furnace, or electric arc furnace. A heat size ranges from about 35 metric tons to over 300 metric tons.

Blast Furnace - A furnace used to melt iron ore that primarily uses coke for heat.

Direct Reduction of Iron (DRI) - A method for processing iron ore that does not melt the iron, instead using hydrogen, methane, and water to turn iron oxide into pure iron.

Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) - A method of processing iron or steel that uses an electrical arc to melt the metal.

Fines - Fine particulate that can clog the pores in the coke bed of a blast furnace; typically smaller than 6.3mm or 0.25in.

Ellingham Diagram - A diagram from showing the oxygen affinity of metals (how likely they are to oxidize).

Tuyere - A type of nozzle used in steelmaking.

Refractory - A material used for thermal protection, also known as "fire brick".

NAAQS - National Ambient Air Quality Standards; standards set by the EPA for local air quality.

Scope 1 Emissions - Direct greenhouse gas emissions from sources controlled or owned by an organization.

Scope 2 Emissions - Emissions that are indirectly associated with the purchase of electricity, steam, heat, or cooling.

Scope 3 Emissions - Emissions associated with the use of the product, including transportation of the product by a third party.
