Female gladiators (gladiatrices) existed in ancient Rome for over 200 years despite social disapproval. These women - both slaves and wealthy nobles - chose sword-fighting over domestic life, trading security for fame and independence. Famous fighters like Amazon and Achillia became celebrities. Though male writers criticized them, archaeological evidence shows they were honored like male gladiators. They prove women have always refused limiting gender roles when given the chance.
