In February 1959, nine experienced Soviet hikers from the Ural Polytechnical Institute mysteriously died in the northern Ural Mountains. Led by Igor Dyatlov, the group had set up camp on the eastern slope of Kholat Syakhl. Overnight, something caused them to cut their way out of their tent and flee into the freezing wilderness, inadequately dressed for the harsh conditions.
