Media-related startup funding struggles to reach prior levels observed in recent years. Significant funding rounds occur, with MUBI, a London-based streaming platform for independent films, securing $100 million from Sequoia Capital. Established in 2007, MUBI provides a monthly subscription service featuring international films, including award winners. Recent data indicates that total funding for media-related categories has decreased by more than two-thirds from 2021, now at approximately $10 billion annually over the past two years. As 2025 approaches, funding levels remain consistent with the previous year, while streaming platforms face limited activity. In contrast, artificial intelligence startups in media attract considerable investor interest. Runway, which develops AI models for media generation, raised $308 million in April, resulting in a valuation exceeding $3 billion. Additionally, ElevenLabs and Synthesia each obtained $180 million, with ElevenLabs focusing on AI voiceover tools and Synthesia on text-to-video conversion tools.
