Pursuing Equality for Trans People - and Everyone!

Host Michelle Beck welcomes Mikki Gillette from Basic Rights Oregon to talk about Pursuing Equality For Trans People – and Everyone!

 Basic Rights Oregon works to ensure that all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) Oregonians experience equality. BRO was formed in 1996 out of a community response to the 30 anti-LGBTQ ballot measures introduced in our state since 1988, intended to marginalize Oregon’s LGBTQ community. BRO is  now in it’s 27th year at the forefront of LGBTQ equality and are frequently regarded as one of the most LGBTQ friendly states in the country. Through their years of dedicated work, they’ve helped secure nondiscrimination laws, created safer schools, increased access to transgender-inclusive health care, banned so-called conversion therapy for LGBTQ youth and won the freedom to marry.

 An avowed Portlander, Mikki’s been on the BRO staff for over seven years. As the Major Gifts Officer, she loves meeting with, and learning about, Basic Rights’ amazing supporters and connecting them with our important work. In addition to heading up BRO’s Major Gifts efforts, Mikki is on the grant writing team and oversees the Planned Giving program. A trans woman, Mikki earned her B.A. from UCLA and M.Ed from the U of O. Her hobbies include meditating, listening to too many podcasts and eating anything Buffalo-flavored. Mikki is also a playwright whose work chronicles the trans experience. She was named one of the “25 People Shaping the Arts in Portland” by Willamette Week in 2022.
