Chicago poet J. Ivy made history at the Grammys this year by helping to pioneer a new category: “Best Spoken Word Poetry Album.” Though he didn’t nominate himself, Ivy took home the gold in the category for his 2022 album ‘The Poet Who Sat By The Door,’ making him the first poet to win a Grammy since Maya Angelou in 2003. He stopped by the Vocalo studios to sit down with Vocalo morning host Bekoe and WBEZ’s Taylor Nazon to discuss his album and how his life has changed since the Grammys… just before the inaugural J. Ivy Day, declared by Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot to celebrate the artist’s birthday and contributions to Chicago arts and culture. J. Ivy will also be performing in support of his album at Chicago’s City Winery on March 28; more information at J-ivy.com.
This segment aired on Vocalo Radio 91.1 FM during Mornings With Bekoe on Thursday, March 2. It was edited by Joshua X. Miller and Morgan Ciocca. Keep up with J. Ivy by following him on Instagram @j_ivy.
