125- Is cultured meat vegan?

Recently the Vegan Society have come out with a strong statement, declaring that "cultured meat is not vegan, nor will it ever be". Is this absolute statement necessary to protect the integrity of the animal rights message, or could a bit more pragmatism be applied here?
