Episode 0: About the Podcast

Hi friends, my name is Aubrianna Snow and I’m the creator and host of the Under the Mat podcast. I wanted to begin this podcast with some brief notes about who I am, why I’m pursuing this project, and what it is and is not. First let me say, I’m not a historian – my education is in journalism, but I’ve been working in the anti-violence sector since I finished my undergrad. I’m currently pursuing a policy-related Masters program, here in Alberta, Canada, where I live. Throughout my career, I’ve become deeply interested in power relations and how they’ve played out throughout history and continue to manifest themselves today. I’ve also long held an interest in the darker sides of the human experience – some of my favorite podcasts revolve around dark history and true crime, so I wanted to explore that from my own lens. A lot of the podcast will focus on historical abuses of power, but not all of it – there will also be fun, spooky elements to spice up the conversation. This podcast is primarily meant to be a fun learning opportunity for folks with similar interests to mine – it’s not meant to be a comprehensive resource, and because of the nature of the medium, at lot of episodes will be a surface-level look at whatever topic is being covered. I’m planning to post a new episode every other week, but that may change as time goes on. Thank you for taking the time to listen, and I hope you enjoy everything I have planned for this show.
