Teen Angst Films (Varsity Blues, Girl, Interrupted, Thirteen, Donnie Darko)

As we wrap up August, we have another back-to-school themed episode. This week, we focus on the angsty years of being a teenager. We also discuss the biggest news to break in quite some time: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are engaged! How much of the wedding will we end up seeing? Will they buy a property in Cleveland? Only time will tell. Ailish was finally able to watch Terrifier 2 and we both hope we can see the third installment before we take a trip to Universal later in the fall. Hannah also watched The Audition and Eraserhead which are two more films checked off her horror list.

To begin the Teen Angst theme, we start with the boys. Varsity Blues is a movie that’s huge in pop culture, but neither of us had seen. We couldn’t help but remember Scandoval and how Tom referred to the whipped cream bikini scene when talking about his affair with Rachel/Raquel. Now that we’ve seen this, we think about him referencing this movie a lot differently… Donnie Darko is one we’d both seen before, but it had been a few years. It’s filled with all-star actors and Jake Gyllenhaal gives an absolutely unreal performance at such a young age. We both agree that the more we watch this one, the more we’ll come to understand it. Moving on to the girls, we have Thirteen. Hannah had watched this when she was a teen, but this was Ailish’s first time watching. It’s safe to say that this one hits a lot differently when you’re watching it as an adult! Is it wrong to say we miss this version of Nikki Reed? Lastly, we have Girl, Interrupted. Another fantastic performance from Angelina Jolie, and the other girls do a great job of depicting mental illness in the 60s. No, Winona Ryder isn’t bad in this film, but both of us were on the fence with her in this role in general.
