Books We Read in Middle School (Holes, Bridge to Terabithia, Because of Winn Dixie, Tuck Everlasting)

This week on Two Girl Cinema Club, we have another Back to School theme. This time, we’re focusing on some classic books we read in middle school! Ailish didn’t get a chance to watch any extra movies this week, but Hannah was able to watch three that were all set in the 80s. We also discussed the newly released trailer/teaser for the highly-anticipated, Marty Supreme, and give our guesses on its likelihood of playing at an upcoming film festival.

We started our discussion on books we read in middle school that were made into movies with Because of Winn Dixie. While we agreed this is a cute movie and book, we felt this one was a little young feeling compared to the others. This was the start of a great run by AnnaSophia Robb though! After watching Tuck Everlasting through adult eyes, we were blown away almost as much as we were the first time we read the book. This movie definitely still hits hard and stays with you. Yes, there’s a little controversy with the age of Winnie, but we feel the changes the movie made from the book are positive ones. Speaking of controversy, we come to Holes. Shia LaBeouf may be a controversial figure now, but there’s not denying how phenomenal he was here. There are so many complex themes being explored here and it’s honestly hard to find something wrong with this film. To round things out, we have Bridge to Terabithia. Obviously, we cried. It’s hard to believe we were barely in double digits reading this book, and the multiple facets of our pre-teen characters opened our eyes to so much.
