Join us for Canon Tim Clayton's sermon:
King of Hope:
Hold on to Hope, Shine Like Stars Against the Darkness
From our scripture reading today in Philippians 2:
'Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain. But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. '
There is an energy that God works that will never be blunted out. A movement of God and of love that cannot be stopped and that will be restored.
Kings want to shine, they want to be adored, but Jesus the King of Kings humbly goes with those who would arrest him in the garden.
In the end we hold onto hope because we know that Jesus gets the final word, because He is worthy, because He has earned it.
When we see through the lies of this age and of evil men who would make themselves kings, and when we instead hold onto Jesus; when we are honest, real, true and vulnerable, bringing all that we are into following Jesus and his self-giving love; then as Paul says we, "may become blameless and pure, 'children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.' Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life.
Trinity North Shore and the church world wide is called into this beautiful way of following Jesus.
"I am not an optimist because I'm not sure everything ends well, nor am I a pessimist because I am not sure everything ends badly, I just carry hope in my heart.
Hope is the feeling that life and work have a meaning, you either have it or you don't. Regardless of the state of the world that surrounds you.
Life without hope is an empty, boring, and useless life. I cannot imagine that I could strive for something if I did not carry hope in me.
I am thankful to God for this gift. It is as big as life itself.
Truth and love will overcome lies and hatred. Nothing is more powerful than individuals acting out of their own conscience. Courage means going against majority opinion in the name of the truth, and it is not enough to stare up the steps, we must step up the stairs."
