Advent Week Three: Joy
Listen to Cn Ross Kimball's message Advent 3: How Do We Know We Are Hearing the Voice of God?

In this insightful sermon, Cn Ross shares a number of ideas to help us with this colossal topic.

Ross looks at the story of the boy Samuel who is being called in the night by the Lord, and the young child doesn't realize it's the voice of God and the priest Eli helps to guide Samuel. We also read the gospel story of John the Baptist wondering if he's hearing from God, wondering if Jesus is the Christ and he sends people asking  “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?", and word is sent to John of all that Jesus is doing, "“Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them...".

For many of us, hearing the voice of God speaking to us is not that easy.
We sometimes struggle with whether the voice we are hearing or the sense of leading we are having is really "the voice of God". We can struggle with that in many kinds of ways, from where to go to college, where to move, what job to take, who to date or who to marry, where to serve, to what to do when we find ourselves in difficult situations; to whether God's forgiveness actually applies to us.

Ross gives us some insights to help us understand the difference between the voice of God and our sometimes confusing own desires. Ross shares helpful insights including understanding the character of Christ Jesus. There's also the kind reminder that when we do make mistakes, there is grace and mercy to carry on in learning to hear the heart and voice of God.
