Mastering Layered Atmosphere

In this episode I'm exploring the world of layering techniques that can create depth and atmosphere in your art. Whether you’re working with acrylics, oils or mixed media, layering is a powerful tool to add mystery, movement and that ethereal vibe to your work.

Here’s a snapshot of what was explored:

1. Layering creates depth by allowing underlying tones to interact with upper layers, adding subtle variations in colour, value and texture.
2. Colour temperature matters—playing with warm and cool pigments can create luminous, dynamic surfaces.
3. Techniques like veiling and glazing offer unique ways to build mood and vibrancy.
4. Experiment with scumbling, dry brushing, and layering thick over thin paint to create textural interest and organic patterns.
5. Use transparent layers to avoid muddiness and keep your colours vibrant.

This week I challenge you to create a series of small layering studies. Pick three techniques we discussed and see if you can capture a specific atmospheric vibe or theme.
