A stereotype is an oversimplified and often generalized belief or assumption about a particular group of people or things. Stereotypes tend to attribute certain characteristics, behaviors, or traits to all members of that group, without recognizing individual differences. For example, stereotypes might be based on race, gender, age, nationality, occupation, or other social categories.

The stereotype of privilege assumes that certain groups enjoy inherent advantages based solely on their identity, such as race, gender, or socioeconomic background, without considering individual circumstances. For example, “white privilege” suggests that all white people benefit from societal advantages based on race, such as access to better opportunities and fewer barriers. Similar stereotypes exist for other groups, like “male privilege” or “wealth privilege,” which imply broad benefits for men or wealthy individuals. While these concepts aim to highlight systemic inequalities, stereotyping privilege can oversimplify, ignoring intersecting factors like personal hardship and diversity within each group.
