On August 30th, 1862, an unusual meteor was observed streaking through the sky over Cambridge, Massachusetts in the early evening. While meteor sightings are common, this one seemed to change course and accelerate at an alarming rate. According to one observant undergraduate student studying astronomy named Edmund, "the blazing orb seemed to have a mishap with its celestial navigation as it careened directly towards the prestigious Harvard College buildings." Much to the shock of townsfolk enjoying their post-dinner strolls through the commons, the meteor appeared to lose control and crash landed in the college courtyard with a blazing trail of smoke and debris raining from the sky. Students and faculty rushing out from their lectures could not believe their eyes at the strange glowing object now resting in the yard, still emitting a curious blue light and wisps of alien smoke. Though unharmed, many in the small New England town would swear the object appeared artificial in nature. While the occurrence remains unexplained to this day, it was a most alien event that disrupted the usual academic tranquility of one of the nation's top institutions of higher learning.
