How a person becomes acceptable to God has been an age-old conflict since Jesus began teaching, a conflict that heated up especially around the time of the reformation in the early 16th century. From that day to this, it has been increasingly contested. On one side, we're accepted by faith alone, and it doesn't matter what we do! On the other side, what we do is precisely the road to acceptance. Our actions gain us merit with God.
