I’m so excited to talk to my friend Marissa Ward about the magic of being mixed-race in an often polarizing world. We talk about how, as the child of an Italian mom and African-American dad, Marissa grew up feeling like she had to choose to identify as either white or black — categories that didn’t allow for the full complexity of who she was.
This inner tension, and the often painful experience of being in a world that felt confused by her very existence, gave rise to an inquiry into the true nature of her identity — into who she really is, separate from other people’s assumptions and expectations.
Marissa shares how, over time, she came to recognize that her mixed identity allowed her to act as a bridge between worlds and cultures. Along the way, she came to see race as the key to union, as opposed to separation.
