Back in the day, yes, way back in the day, in the 1880’s, people grew food for their animals. It wasn’t until the 1890's that introduced the incorporating of brewing by-products into animal feed and saw the start of Purina Mills in 1894, according to the Journal of Applied Animal Nutrition (JAAN). By 1894, people started to sell horse meat for cat and dog food, and formulated wheat and corn for horse food. The feed industry was born. However, this was not something that the average farmer would use. In fact, here in the United States, farmers would not start to use this type of feed en masse until much later.
