Most of us know how important firstborn children are to their parents, especially firstborn sons to their dads. They are the pioneers, the "guinea pigs" for the new parents, the dominant child that often pushes their siblings around because "they know best," right? This is nothing new. From the very beginning (see Genesis 1-2) firstborn status is critical for understanding ancient Israelite culture, God's sovereign choices, and Jesus' role in God's family as our "firstborn, elder brother."
