In her July 2016 deposition, Maxwell vigorously denied virtually all of Giuffre’s claims. She repeatedly called Giuffre a “liar” and insisted she never facilitated minors or arranged sexual encounters between Giuffre and Jeffrey Epstein or others. Maxwell stated she had never asked Giuffre to have sex with anyone and claimed she never witnessed any inappropriate underage activity by Epstein. She also denied involvement in facilitating meetings between Giuffre and figures like Prince Andrew—contradicting Giuffre’s allegations—insisting, for example, that she had never gifted a puppet to Andrew that he subsequently used inappropriately.

Maxwell’s demeanor during the deposition was defensive and occasionally irritable, bristling at repeated lines of questioning. Analysts noted that her defensiveness and consistent denials heightened suspicions potentially harmful to her credibility, especially given her privileged background and preparation time. Maxwell also avoided answering any questions framed as relating to “consensual adult sex,” refusing to engage with those areas of inquiry.
