Ghislaine Maxwell, the longtime associate of Jeffrey Epstein, has formally sought to serve her 20-year U.S. federal sentence in the United Kingdom. Her legal team and family argue that she is being subjected to harsh and “disgraceful” prison conditions in the U.S., claiming she has faced poor treatment and unsafe living standards since her conviction. Maxwell, who holds dual U.S. and U.K. citizenship, contends that being moved to a British facility would not only improve her welfare but also allow her to be closer to her family during her incarceration.

Under international prisoner transfer agreements, however, such a move would not be immediate. Maxwell is required to serve at least a portion of her sentence in the United States—typically three years—before applying for relocation. Approval would then depend on negotiations between U.S. and U.K. authorities, who would need to agree on the terms of her transfer. Her request highlights her ongoing efforts to reshape the conditions of her punishment, even as her conviction continues to reverberate globally.
