Traveling Engineer 3 Shelf basements and sewer lines

I had a client that was concerned about the structural condition of his 1920's bungalow. A previous homeowner had run the sewer line through the shelf on the back side of his shelf basement, and left a large hole - to the tune of four to five feet in height. His question was how much of a structural problem would this be? Here's the conclusion I reached.
