Most teachers know the importance of reading aloud but the research also backs this up.

  • Reading aloud has been found to be the most significant factor in the development of literacy levels of young children (Kalb & Van Ours, 2014)
  • As a reading intervention strategy it has many benefits: Motivating children to read, improving basic comprehension and development (Bus, Van Ijzendoorn, & Pellegrini, 1999; Fox, 2013; Swanson, Vaughn, Wanzek, Petscher, Heckert, Cavanaugh, Kraft, & Tackett, 2011)
  • Reading to children in the early years has been linked to related language growth, emergent literacy and reading achievement (Bus et al., 1995).
  • An analysis of 29 studies found “significant, positive effects for read-aloud interventions on children’s language, phonological awareness, print concepts, comprehension, and vocabulary outcomes” suggesting that read-aloud interventions “provide children at-risk of reading difficulties with higher literacy outcomes than children who do not participate in these interventions” (Swanson et al. 2012, p. 13).

Schools should encourage and support their teachers to read to their young students with greater frequency throughout primary school.

Reading aloud in the classroom and at home should be continued well past the period of acquiring independent reading skills and include a full range of text types.

To talk about this further, Sharon Callen is joined by consultant, former teacher and most importantly avid reader Rebecca Bird from Pegi Williams Books.

Rebecca shares her stories, learnings and insights about engaging children in reading, identifying the best books for Read Alouds, how teachers can set up their libraries and many other tools and techniques.
