We grow up being told a lot of things that sound reasonable — things that society repeats so often they become truths. But out in the real world, especially when things go sideways, some of these so-called truths can get you hurt, broke, or worse. In this episode of the Survival Punk Podcast, I’m breaking down four common pieces of “wisdom” that are anything but wise.

These aren’t just bad advice — they’re dangerous lies. Let’s shine a light on ‘em.

1. Expiration Dates Mean It’s Unsafe to Eat

This one is pure nonsense pushed by corporations and lawyers. Most expiration dates — especially on canned goods and dry foods — have nothing to do with safety. They’re about peak freshness or legal liability.

That can of beans with last month’s date? It’s probably good for years. I’ve eaten canned goods well past the printed date with zero issues. If it’s sealed, not swollen, not leaking, and smells fine — you’re probably good. Use your eyes, nose, and common sense, not a marketing label.

Preppers know: the food that’s in your pantry is better than the food you planned to replace but didn’t.

2. The Police Will Protect You

I don’t say this to bash law enforcement — I say it because it’s true. Cops don’t prevent crimes. They respond after the crime is committed. If someone kicks your door in, you’re on your own until help arrives — and that might be too late.

Self-defense is your job. Whether that means carrying concealed, locking your doors, or being situationally aware — don’t outsource your family’s safety to a system that’s spread thin and arrives late.

3. The Government Will Help You in a Crisis

If you’re relying on FEMA, you’re gambling with your life.

Look at Katrina. Look at Texas during the freeze. Look at Maui. The help that’s promised either shows up late, doesn’t show up at all, or comes with strings attached. Survival is your job — not Uncle Sam’s.

The system might have some safety nets, but when it fails, it fails hard. That’s why you prep. That’s why you keep a backup plan and supplies on hand.

4. Debt Is Just a Part of Life

The idea that “you’ll always have a car payment” or “debt is just normal” is one of the biggest traps ever sold. Debt isn’t just a bill — it’s a leash. In hard times, it turns from an inconvenience to a noose around your neck.

You don’t want to be choosing between food and a credit card minimum when the economy tanks or you lose your job. Get lean. Pay it off. If you can’t afford it without credit, you probably can’t afford it.

Prepping isn’t just about beans, bullets, and Band-Aids — it’s about financial freedom too.

Final Thoughts

These four lies are just the beginning. Society pushes them because they make us easier to control, easier to sell to, and easier to pacify.

But survival means thinking for yourself. It means seeing through the BS. It means rejecting what everyone else thinks is “common sense” — and trusting your own instincts.
