In this episode, Steven interviews Robert Lloyd-Taylor who has a background in boxing, they discuss the lessons that boxing teaches an individual and how it can be applied to life in general, be it in our personal lives or in business. Robbie also highlights that with boxing, you can gain respect or you will come to respect the person who is training or doing boxing in the gym and that boxing should be considered to be part of the school curriculum. Listen now to hear more about life in boxing! Key Takeaways
Differences in Levels of Fitness. Robbie mentions that It is going for the process. If you are a British level, you have to work for it. For when you first started gym, that's when it all begins. You start progressing through the rounds for the quality opponents, the quality of sparring, and you built into that. So, dedicate yourself to it. Work towards it. That's how you get there.
The difference in Mindset. There isn't really a difference, but there is. Robbies says that it's not a lot of difference. But you do see that difference in mindset.
Boxing as part of the school's curriculum. The coaches still need to instil discipline in the children, but if you get that balance, it's definitely inaudible to bring boxing back into schools.
How has boxing helped? Mindset-wise. Robbie thinks that he is who he is. Always have been. Aside from being re-energetic, it helped Robbie channel his energy a lot better. While then being around in the street just fighting around then whatever, he was always in the gym, just focusing on what he was doing. He always had the goal in mind which is always working towards keeping him straight in that road, keeping him healthy.  Somewhat disciplined definitely.
Hereditary or Acquired. It is definitely something that you're born with. It is definitely something you can work with as well. Most of the guys that you see, you don't see the work that they put in like they have a little something that they're born with but behind closed doors, they work their ass off.
Insight to the Daily Routine. Not one is the same. When Robbie first started, he was doing just the traditional training which is now being shown no good. When he was a professional, he was running 7, 8, 9, sometimes 10 miles on the hills, like 3, 4 times a week. Loads of circuit training. When he fought like for a high combination, he was spent, literally done, nothing left in the tank. So, he is training harder. He’s done more of what he was doing. And the harder he trains, the less fit he was on fight night which he just couldn't make sense of. The people around me couldn't make sense of him…
The Part That Nutrition Play. Nutrition is a massive part of it. On the first part of his career, his diet was awful. He could eat whatever he wanted. It's likely just shoving yourself with loads of calories but not realizing what he was doing for myself. It was in the late part of his career that he started eating a lot better. Reuben, Adam Bove, and James Sawyer really helped him in the nutritious side of things and see certain doctors, taking blood and stuff. That really helped him turn his health and fitness around.
Career. Definitely, being able to communicate through training camp and in the fight is very very important. That is just something that Robbie tries to earn as well.
Taking a moment. Sometimes you got to be up from almost an opportunity and it's up to you whether you pick it up and take that opportunity or not. Some people rise to the challenge in the most unexpected times. And other people kind of melt. And you're the epitome in that moment of rising.
Start now and get perfect later. By Rob Moore. Meaning, just crack on with it. Whether you are doing business, maybe you get really fit, start a family cause it's never gonna be a perfect time... Go off your goals, go off your ambitions, and really devote yourself to something. There is never a perfect time than now.
Best Moments“I feel if people not forced into boxing but it was a little bit of culture inside schools, it would get out that aggression, and it would be that respect.”
“It's not gonna happen just like that. Again, it's gonna happen over time. As long as you notice it and work towards it. It does improve, definitely.”
“I've got a handful of goji berries with me. All the superfoods you can imagine. Regularly taken and rubbed in and refined sugar, and I've got to say, sustainably, my energy is there throughout the day.”
“You need to have a routine of a champion basically to sustain longevity in the craft that you are trying to master. Nutrition is for me, regardless of whether in boxing or not, is key. If you want to live a healthy life, if you wanna get to... my goal is to get over to a hundred years of age, that's gonna be training. That's gonna be the right rest and also the nutrition as well. I've got a lot of things to work on.”
“It is like a mini sales pitch, and you transfer that enthusiasm and that belief that can come out and that next round or the second half of the fight, and lets you turn it over round.”
“People like my mind always believe, like the law of attraction, I always believe I was gonna get in. I was gonna win.”
“I wanna give back because it gives me so much confidence, boxing.”
“Lead by example.”
“Be happy with what you're doing. Be appreciative of what you have.”
