Be a better fighter and a better trainer.
Today on The Steven Sully Study Podcast, Steven interviews Ross about his boxing career, his personal life, and his brainchild, the Queensbury Boxing League. Queensbury Boxing League, a new boxing platform which was launched in 2010, has given new perspectives to the UK boxing scene ever since.
Ross also gives excellent advice for aspiring boxers and trainers out there. There’s a particular dynamic between a trainer and a fighter that needs to be built and developed so that they both better themselves. Know the difference between amateur and professional boxing, the importance of discipline, and the realities of earning with professional boxing when you tune in.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Ross Minter didn’t see himself as a professional boxer like his dad Alan Minter who’s also a former World Middleweight Champion. But when his dad started a boxing gym, he observed, tried things out, and loved it. At 15, he began as an amateur boxer and became a professional boxer when he was 21.
What is a mentor? According to Ross, a mentor is someone who’s there for you to guide you while your best interest is at heart. They’re 100% there for you and put a lot of time & effort for you.
Discipline is a critical practice that Ross embodies outside and inside the ring. Once he gets home from training, the discipline of keeping yourself in shape does not stop. He always does a nutritional check. He never got tempted with smoking, drinking, and other vices.
Keep reality in check. It does not mean that when you get to the level that you wanted (i.e. becoming a professional boxer), everything will not come in easy. Sometimes while you follow your dreams, you need to get full-time or part-time jobs so you could put food on the table.
“When you turn pro, it’s not a nice business to be in. It’s a business, for one. Two, it’s all about money which business is. And, three, you’re a piece of meat – meaning, you’re someone that’s gonna be put in there for the businessman to manoeuvre you.” – Ross
He, together with his partner Alan Foley, set up the Queensbury Boxing League in 2010 which offers a new structure for professional boxing matches. It tries to reinvent the wheel, and they pride on prioritising their players’ conditions.
BEST MOMENTS
“Knowing your body and being the focus and also having that discipline…when you’re at home, being discipline at everything exactly is very hard to do.”
“The mechanics are important in training someone, but also the mindset.”
“You need always to learn… Keep learning all the time.”
“What I like about boxing is you can transfer that mindset, skillset, and that characteristic over onto other things in your life – family, business, or whatever it may be in your social relationships.”

ABOUT THE HOST
The Steven Sulley Study is my take on success. My view is you should focus on a number of key areas to be a well-rounded individual. Success should not be just one thing like money, for example, it should also consist of a healthy fit lifestyle and thriving relationships. As a person who has made a success in life and also made some cock-ups, I can offer suggestions and tips on how to become successful or at least start your pursuit of success.
I started from leaving school at 16 with very poor school results to pursue a career in plumbing following the directions of my parents that then lead me to a barrister's chamber and then to a sales floor. From here, I established a foothold in the sales market promoting financial products as well as being a founder of an art agency that has a Soho based art studio.
In addition, I have invested into an urban fashion brand and into a wellness tech company, and my latest addition to the business portfolio is a property company that which creates HMO's in Medway, Kent. The diverse range of industries I find myself in has allowed me to create wealth that enables me to be my own boss so I can pursue my dreams.
As a former boxer and avid sportsman, I find there are similarities between the running of businesses and competing. In my episodes, I will be sharing some of my experiences to explore deeper these connections and how they may bring you success."
