Music can go beyond its words and melodies. You can get creative and be valuable to everyone else at the same time.
Today on the Steven Sully Study Podcast, hear Jevon, a budding rap artist, talk about his career journey, his craft, and the music industry. He also shares some nuggets of wisdom for those who want to get creative, whether it in music, film, drama, etc., and make money out of it. Jevon emphasizes that it’s important that you continue learning and improving yourself as an artist, and most importantly, as an individual. Discover also how you can be true to the music that you make, be an inspiration to everyone, and help others once you enter the music industry.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
There should be more resources available for the youth that could start their creative journey. Jevon does not think that there is enough. Jevon is lucky to have been surrounded by musically-inclined people. He had a hippie aunt, an uncle who owns a synth keyboard he remembered playing with, and another uncle who has a massive vinyl collection.
Be open to different kinds of learning. You can enrol in a university and get a degree but know that does not guarantee you a bright future. Yes, it can definitely add to your credibility but it’s all about the character you build.
Jevon makes his music his own. He does not mind if his music is unconventional for others. But that does not mean he fully dismisses what’s typical. He tries to learn from everything that he hears and observes.
Being a creative, you have to learn how to manage your time, especially if you make money out of it. Also, you have to be conscious of your opinions and how to deliver them.
A number of trophies and high record sales are more than satisfying to achieve. But Jevon advises that you enjoy the process of writing, producing, and sharing your music.
As a father, Jevon values balance in how he guides his kids. He wants them to learn and experience everything. You can be a good model for them so they learn how to strive and achieve their goals but you can never manoeuvre their lives for them.
Where do he see himself in five years? He wants to be happy, be financially successful, and most of all, still be hungry for learning and improving himself as an individual.
BEST MOMENTS
“There could be more resources for the youth now to get in the creative industry. I don’t think that there is.”
“You don’t have to have good grades to be successful at all. It helps, it opens up doors for you but no. I know people who have a degree and struggling to get a job now. It’s really about your character as a person.”
“It’s important that you have the right people around you that you can trust.”
“You can’t give someone without having them to work for it because they’ll feel entitled.”
“Know your worth, know your value because you can do a lot by yourself.”
“You have to be honest in your music because that translates through the vibrations.”

ABOUT THE HOST
The Steven Sulley Study is my take on success. My view is you should focus on a number of key areas to be a well-rounded individual. Success should not be just one thing like money, for example, it should also consist of a healthy fit lifestyle and thriving relationships. As a person who has made a success in life and also made some cock-ups, I can offer suggestions and tips on how to become successful or at least start your pursuit of success.
I started from leaving school at 16 with very poor school results to pursue a career in plumbing following the directions of my parents that then lead me to a barrister's chamber and then to a sales floor. From here, I established a foothold in the sales market promoting financial products as well as being a founder of an art agency that has a Soho based art studio.
In addition, I have invested into an urban fashion brand and into a wellness tech company, and my latest addition to the business portfolio is a property company that which creates HMO's in Medway, Kent. The diverse range of industries I find myself in has allowed me to create wealth that enables me to be my own boss so I can pursue my dreams.
As a former boxer and avid sportsman, I find there are similarities between the running of businesses and competing. In my episodes, I will be sharing some of my experiences to explore deeper these connections and how they may bring you success."
