‘If you don’t show them what you want to do then they’ll keep asking you to do something you don’t want to do’
Steven is in conversation with Marylou Faure; Parisian illustrator and artist currently based in London.
Her vibrant and playful work can be recognised by the intense colour palette and her quirky style which often features the curvy female form which embodies independent empowered women.
Marylou shares her journey and how she found her own unique style by being true to herself and letting others know what she wanted to do.
Marylou and Woodbury House are about to embark on a new collaboration and this is a great opportunity to find out more about this Artist and her engaging work.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
I was lucky because both my parents were positive and encouraged me to go into the world of art Because of them I thought could make a career in the art world even though it is very competitive and there are many amazing artists out there.
I always try to keep in mind that everyone has their doubts, no one goes through the journey thinking they are amazing all the time and speaking to other artists helps you realise everyone has their own struggle at some time.
The biggest challenges are when things don’t follow through or when you reach out and you don’t get what you want or are expecting from someone.
My art is very personal and when I don’t get the positive response I’m looking for I feel it’s a personal negative response for me but you just have stay focused and realise you are not going to be to everyone’s taste and you should always continue to do what you love.
My art is mostly digital but I love to collaborate with people who bring my work to life whether it’s a good printer who will print manually adding depth and vibrancy, or working with a 3D designer turning my artwork into 3D sculptures.
I think there is a bit of myself in all my characters and I feel strongly about the fact you should feel good about yourself, feel good in your body and have confidence because then you will get what you want in life.
It’s good to understand what message you want to give, the narrative of something you are trying to do through your illustration, it helps your audience to understand what you are trying to say.
I like to work by series particularly for personal work, I give myself a brief and then work to it. Most series are inspired by a song title.
Always aspire to do more and understand that to be truly happy you need to push the boundaries and make something more out of what you love.
BEST MOMENTS
‘At the beginning, I had to do some work that wasn’t my favourite but I made sure I was only showing was only the things I liked and what I wanted to work on’
‘I love to get involved in projects that support charities or non-profit organisations I find it interesting and it’s a nice way for people to see my work’
‘When I was working on my new style I was naturally drawing the female form curvy independent, empowered women’
