In this fascinating episode Steven Sulley meets with Shahbaz Choudhry renowned fast bowler and the entrepreneur who is the force behind the ‘pace journal’
He has brought his expertise and mindset as a sportsman to his business ventures and in the pace journal has realized a project that combines cricket with his entrepreneurial skills. In this interview Shahbaz discusses his drive to be the fastest bowler in the world and the mindset synergy shared by successful sportsman and successful entrepreneurs.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Are you naturally born with it?
As a fast bowler you can develop more speed and the key to this is the development of technique using biomechanics.
Technique
Biomechanics – creating optimum speed and optimum power is the result of a domino effect, through being able to transfer energy along the kinetic chain effectively.
There are some people who naturally possess this technique, but it can always be developed further.
Increased speed can be attained through developing technique.
Genetics
Some individuals may be genetically faster, but they can also develop their technique further.
There are always genetic anomalies, those people who have completely flawed techniques but can bowl superfast. These anomalies can be seen across a range of different sports including boxing.
Nutrition
It’s not you are what you eat, it’s you are what you ate 6 months ago. Working with Ruben Tabares was about understanding that nutrition is a lifestyle approach linked to mindset. How you look is a reflection of your mental state.
Training
Generically – being strong - the stronger you are the more forces you can absorb and the more forces you can produce.
Specifically – breaking down where forces go through your body when bowling and training individual muscles
Training should cover different areas it is necessary to train for strength, flexibility, endurance, mobility and speed.
How did the Pace Journal begin?
Following an extended period developing his business interests, Shahbaz made a decision begin training again. During this training period he documented on a daily basis his return to fitness. Other athletes contacting him for advice provided the inspiration for the creation of a platform where people could access information from a range of different people.
The pace journal provides a platform where those interested in the niche that is fast bowling can gain an insight from differing fast bowlers as to how they did what they did.
How did you grow your social media following?
Actively working to understand the way that the audience likes to receive information increased the followers and increased engagement. Breaking information into ‘pace bites’ and the use of ‘did you know’ facts are successful elements that increased engagement and the size of the pace community.
A conscious decision to respond to people who comment has furthered the loyalty of the pace community and proved to be a very successful strategy. The positive way that individual followers feel when they receive a response makes it worth the time taken to respond.
What’s in the future?
The pace journal will seek to offer more content via masterclasses and a premium subscription. The model will be used to create niche platforms for other areas of cricket such as batting.
