Growing up in Apartheid South Africa, Nosipho Maketo-van den Bragt recognized that there was something “off” about the world around her, but it wasn’t until her family moved to Zimbabwe at the age of 10 that she saw what life could be like. Becoming a lawyer was an act of rebellion, a way of fighting for herself and for her community, but it was the creation of Chocolate Tribe, the studio she founded with her husband, that has fully visualized Nosipho’s vision of a better world, one that is equal, open, vibrant, and creative. We recently had the opportunity to speak with Nosipho about being a child in a household of active rebellion, the pressure of being a woman in a role of authority, and the importance of making time for yourself.
