In September, 2021, Phil’s world was turned upside down when he fell ill with covid. A healthy and vibrant, highly active and on-the-move guy, Phil had no health issues to speak of. Covid was something that his family had all gone through at one point or another with seemingly no issues but Phil’s covid diagnosis brought on complications that would be life altering for their household. Phil’s wife, Kristi, knew that something was amiss quickly when she checked on him one morning only to see that he wasn’t able to speak and had a different overall awareness about him.
Phil went to the ER where he was on his own without his family surrounding him due to covid and the nature of the pandemic at that time. It was revealed within a short 48 hours to his wife that he had sustained two strokes which would later be confirmed by his doctor to be a direct relation to his covid illness. Phil’s frontal lobe had been affected with his strokes, sustaining them in the middle of the night while he slept, rendering him unable to recognize his family and friends in the initial days after the diagnosis. A scary time for everyone, Phil only remembers a conversation he had with one of his sons approximately a week prior to the strokes. After that, his recollection of waking up, so-to-speak, was being in a rehabilitation facility, having to learn how to walk as well as swallow once again.
Faith, tenacity, and support are the pillars that brought Phil and his family through his recovery. Phil worked his tail off with multiple therapies over the course of months, digging in and making a concerted choice to give it all he had. Phil and Kristi’s thankfulness and gratitude run deep for everyone that came forward to help them through those challenging months. If you know Phil and Kristi, you know that they never miss an opportunity to show up for others, they’re some of the most generous humans you will have the chance to meet. Having the tables turned so that others could give them what they so lovingly have always done for their communities was a very real and pivotal part to the healing Phil experienced. That love and connection from others was a catalyst for him to push through and fight to get well. This walking miracle is proof that anything is possible!
