The mythology of Christmas is bedeviling to me. Why do otherwise intelligent people continue to promote fairy tales over the truth? We spend so much time focusing on the things which never happened and the things which are meaningless and even harmful that the amazing and beautiful story of God's redemption breaking into the world gets lost.
So we're getting rid of the non-existent innkeeper, dispensing with the singing angels, learning why no one invited shepherds to their party, and understanding that three gifts don't mean three wise men, or even necessarily men at all. We are sticking to the plain historical facts about a miraculous birth that changed the whole world. Come along for the ride!
This week: One woman has a life-long shame removed from her while another one agrees to be condemned for the rest of her life. It's the Christmas story you've probably never heard, week one.
