This is the hardest teaching of the Sermon on the Mount. It's the one that people like to think Jesus didn't really mean. Even after I shared this message, I had a congregation member come and say that the Bible is full of metaphors, so this passage is probably one of those.Sorry. The context is clear and the history is clear. This is a plain teaching. The disciples may not have liked it, but they got it. In Acts we see that they followed it. In the first centuries after the Resurrection it was lived out. It's just the corruption of our hearts that lead us to think that we know better. We don't.This is the world Jesus is presenting and the instructions he is giving for his people to live by. Maybe we should believe him, or at least give it a try.
