As Doctors we take an oath. We take an oath to heal and not harm. Seems simple enough. Yet evidence shows, recent scientific and medical advancements are now moving beyond our human capacity to manage.

While we congratulate ourselves on these technological advancements; a quiet truth secretly gnaws away at our belief.

Are we truly helping and healing humanity?

We may assume such a question is a fictitious anxiety of a few over cautious medical practitioners. Certainly easy to dismiss.

Yet, in this fictitious assumption, the movie Jurassic Park comes to mind. The film succinctly identifies with our current dilemma:

“Scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could; that they didn't stop to think if they should” Ironic that an observation made in a 1993 fantasy film is still applicable in 2014.

So what is this impending threat that has many otherwise level headed medical professionals apprehensive, uneasy and yes, even over-zealous?

Antibiotic resistant bacteria. Our modern day Jurassic Park. Truth is indeed stranger than fiction.

Despite our scientific know-how, despite our medical advancements and despite our technological genius; these tiny micro-organisms are literally bringing us to our knees.

A day is coming in the not too distant future when virtually all invasive practical procedures will come to a grinding halt. This includes any and all types of surgery, transplants and replacement therapies. Yes, we may be able to forego non-medical procedures; however surgeons will be hard pressed to “opt out” of open heart surgery, kidney transplants or other critical life saving medical procedures.

Am I too, one of these over-zealous alarmist?

Not according to the CDC branch of the World Health Organization. They have also identified antibiotic resistant bacteria as a bigger threat than global warming. They recognize these deadly bugs are bigger than global terrorism, natural calamities or any other human catastrophe known to date.

Yet, because we sit on the cusp of this ticking time bomb; medical and scientific communities continue to turn a blind eye.

The reputable Professor Sally Davis, the CMO of NHS was the first to coin the phrase, “ticking time bomb”.

Is this phrase warranted? Are we creating fear where fear does not exist? Do these micro- organism really have such destructive potential?

As a respected medical practitioner of 30 years, I myself first recognized a problem in 1989. Yet despite my cautions to both the pharmaceutical companies and former Prime Minister Tony Blair, my cautions were ignored.

Today we are even further along on our catastrophic path.

We are facing a mortal enemy that has learned from us, adapted to us and exploits every corner of our genetic vulnerabilities with lethal precision.

Those of us who dared to speak up in the early days have been ridiculed, ignored and dismissed. Pharmaceuticals, manufacturers, government and even many Doctors continue to reject this elephant in the room. Why?

Corporate greed is one factor. Short term convenience is another. It's difficult for humans to admit error. Even more difficult to accept defeat.
