Ireland’s newest heavyweight star Jack Marley is going to the Olympics. The Monkstown BC fighter qualified at the European Games in Poland, where he won silver. In doing so, he became the first Irish heavyweight or super-heavyweight to win a major medal (World, European or Olympics) since Gearoid O Colman way back in 1947, O Colmain winning the European Championships in Dublin. Here, The Rocky Road catches up with Marley to hear how he got started in the sport, why he persevered when Irish titles dried up in his teenage years, when it all clicked and what he’s expecting to do at Paris 2024. We discuss how he skipped the Leaving to make a step-up in the sport, finding his man strength and why belittling the big boys is not such a good idea. In a revealing discussion, Marley also talks about doing it for the people, the leadership Kellie Harrington gives to the Irish team and being inspired to think about his future in the pro game after attending Katie Taylor’s Dublin homecoming. Despite being just 20 years old, Marley has a wise head on his young shoulders and Irish fans, crying out for another great heavyweight, would be entitled to start getting excited just about now.
