‘I’ll tell you a funny story…’ Dennis Hogan is coming home. After 36 fights all over the world – from his base in Australia to Mexico via Germany and the USA – the Kildare man is finally set to realise his dream. He’s been visualising a world title fight at The Point ever since his days sitting ringside at Bernard Dunne’s big nights there and now it’s all set to go down on the Katie Taylor v Chantelle Cameron bill at the 3Arena on May 20. Kildare man Hogan will defend his IBO world title against JJ Metcalf at the venue and he’s already fought the fight in his mind 100 times. Here ‘The Hurricane’ discusses his amateur career and kryptonite Kenneth Egan, starting out in Oz, giving up the gargle, adopting a world champion mindset long before he started fighting for titles, the Aussies’ ridiculous propensity for shortening every word and the time a German newspaper reported that he was related to Crocodile Dundee. He recalls the look of shame he got from Mexican boxing royalty when he was ‘ripped’ in Monterray and the fighter who told him ‘you’re going home in a bodybag’ in New York as well as the Croke Park ambition that’s still burning within and the inspiration he’s taken from joining fellow Lilywhite fighter Gary Cully at Matchroom. Hogan’s fought the best of the best and at 38 years old, reckons he’s still at the base of the mountain, getting ready to scale the beast.
