(6/7/23) Small Cap stocks have sprung to life...but, these are also the companies least-able to weather an economic downturn. Market breadth has been pretty narrow this year, and if you didn't own the top ten stocks, you weren't able to participate in the benefits. Small Caps, Mid Caps, and Emerging Market stocks have underperformed this year. (The Russell 2000 is at the same level as when the year began.) But over the last few days, sector rotation has energized Small Cap stocks, much of it in short covering. This activity is likely short-lived, and we expected to see a stall or a pullback. Market history bears this out. We're using the current rally to rebalance risk before the tide turns.
