Lifestyle IS the goal.
It is absolutely necessary to have goals, but where many get trapped is thinking the goal itself will change their life.
The issue is achieving a goal doesn't change who you are, and once you get to the end of it... what happens next? Do you just constantly keep creating new goals, or do you revert back to who you were before you achieved it?
It is crucial to focus on using your goal to help you change who you are in the process. You must become someone else in order to see sustainable results and not revert back to old habits.
Think about it.. if your goal is to lose 40lbs, what happens once you get there?
"Alright, now that I am 40lbs lighter.... I guess I can have the cake since I worked so hard. Oh I guess I can drink that beer since I achieved my goal" and then at some point you realize "OH CRAP I've gained back a bunch of weight." Versus becoming someone who has changed their lifestyle so they can continually live 40lbs lighter than they were forever.
